Unlearn.ai is at the forefront of AI medical research—pioneering digital twinning technology that assists medical directors in streamlining studies, predicting outcomes, and evaluating successes. Their unrivaled application needed a refresh that would honor the wonder of their advancements, and reflect the evolution of their brand. Oh, and it needed to be done in 3 weeks.
Reflecting a modernized, optimistic rebrand.
As Unlearn.ai found increased success, the brand evolved to convey a more optimistic and bright outlook. With the launch of their exquisite new brand, they also wanted to redesign the product to reflect the same lighter value, and reinforce the futuristic nature of their work. The challenge became delivering a beautiful user experience that carried the brand ethos forward, without distracting from the readability of the life-critical data the application promises.
Planning for the unknowable
When operating at the cutting edge of technology and medicine, it’s impossible to predict what innovation is right around the corner. That’s why we focused on developing a toolkit of flexible components that would grow and adapt to all the unforeseeable needs of the platform. Type, colors, components, variables, and data-vis all needed to be designed with an eye toward scalability.
Data-first,
usability always
The use case of this app is very specific: help scientists conduct bio-medical research. Anything that got in the way of our our highly-technical audience’s ability to structure rigorous studies and analyze data was stripped away—leaving a beauty in bright, no-nonsense functionality.
Engineer whispering
Taking advantage of the newest releases from Figma—universal variables, tokens, and dev mode—we’ve overhauled the system to talk to developers like… well, developers. What used to be a process wrought with sidecar documentation and exhaustive handoff conversations, is now made frictionless as designers and engineers speak the same language.
The addition of variables to Figma fundamentally changed the workflow of designers and developers in the process of building new sites. Now, with the change of a single cell designers can cascade changes across the entire system, and developers are notified of everywhere their code needs to change. Gone is guesswork and tedious QA.

Breakneck pace and a system for the future.
In an aggressive 3-week sprint, our 2-person design team was able to give shape to the long future of Unlearn.ai’s product roadmap—defining all of the key product features needed for relaunch. More importantly we laid a foundation with countless components, variables, modes, and design philosophies so the application can grow with the organizational needs.
